Mes premiers parc et plage du Costa Rica

Petite station balnéaire sur la côte Pacifique, Montezuma est un coin tranquille où il fait bon passer quelques jours loin de la grande ville.
Une rue principale, quelques hotels et auberges, des petits restos en bord de plage où il fait bon déguster un Gallo pinto (plat traditionnel à base de riz mélangé avec des haricots rouges, servi avec une viande au choix) ou un Casado (Entendez littéralement le plat de l’homme « marié »: là encore du riz, des frijoles les fameux haricots rouges, une salade souvent de choux, parfois des bananes plantain, et une viande ou un poisson au choix …), accompagné d’un Batido (jus de fruits frais dilué avec de l’eau ou du lait façon smoothie ou milkshake)… On vient ici pour les plages de sable noir ou de sable et galets rouges qui jouxtent la ville, ou en encore pour le parc naturel de Cabo Blanco.

Situé à moins d’une heure en bus de Montezuma, ce parc, mon premier au Costa Rica est une belle découverte: une balade un peu sportive de 1h30 dans la forêt permet d’atteindre une belle plage de sable blanc tout en rencontrant de nombreux animaux en chemin: coatis, familles de singes hurleurs, serpents, oiseaux, écureuils… Rien de tel après cette bonne marche qu’un plongeon dans la mer, mais attention, ici les vagues sont puissantes et il y a de nombreux rochers, les précautions d’usage sont de rigueur…

Une belle première étape dans mon voyage au Costa Rica!

Les yeux dans le vert à Monteverde

Accessible avec patience par une piste cahotante qui grimpe dur, la petite ville de Monteverde se mérite… mais à l’arrivée, on n’est pas déçu par ce que l’on y trouve.

Ici, on y vit sur un nuage, ou plutôt dans les nuages (ou presque) et c’est à cela que la localité doit son nom. Car ici tout est bien vert, même en cette fin de saison sèche (de décembre à avril) alors que dans la plupart des forêts costaricaines la nature montre quelques signes de souffrance. Et si la forêt tropicale humide proche est ainsi, c’est parce qu’elle bénéficie d’une forêt de nuages, entendez par là un magnifique regroupement de nuages blancs au-dessus de la végétation, qui la maintient humide et verdoyante toute l’année.

Pas étonnant que cet écrin de verdure protégé sous forme de réserves soit devenu le paradis de nombreux animaux: singes, oiseaux, insectes… mais aussi des touristes venus les voir.

La commune vit essentiellement de l’écotourisme: excursions guidées dans les réserves pour l’observation des oiseaux et animaux de jour comme de nuit, promenade sur des points suspendus ou tyroliennes dans la canopée…

On paye le prix fort mais la nature nous le rend bien par ses merveilles: coatis, singes, paresseux, tatoos, magnifiques mais rares Quetzals (oiseau emblématique du Guatemala), oiseaux en tous genres, serpents, scorpions, tarentules… Un régal pour les amoureux de la nature et de la vie sauvage!

Logé dans l’ancien cratère d’un volcan, le lac Atitlan est une belle étendue d’eau de 18km au pied du Volcan San Pedro. On le traverse en lancha (petits bateaux rapides) permettant de se déplacer plus facilement et rapidement qu’en bus pour visiter les petites villes qui bordent toutes le lac mais ne ressemblent pas pour autant.

Panajachel  – La touristique

Point d’arrivée de la plupart des chicken bus (bus locaux souvent bondés, d’où leur surnom de « chicken bus »), la ville de panajachel est assez touristique. Beaucoup de petites boutiques artisanales, restaurants, hotels et bars. Idéal pour une première nuit près du lac avant d’aller explorer les autres villages.

San Pedro – Le point de chute

Il s’agit du point de chute des backpackers. On y pose ses valises pour quelques nuits le temps de visiter le lac, et y retrouver d’autres voyageurs pour boire une bière. Pas grand intérêt à mon sens.

San Juan – La Bobo

A 5 minutes en tuk-tuk (moto taxi) de San Pedro, San Juan est l’étape « artisanale » du lac. On s’y promène pour visiter l’un des ateliers de tissage, une galerie d’art, une miellerie, une chocolaterie artisanale, une encore boutique de plantes médicinales… Une balade agréable car la ville a su garder son charme et sa relative authenticité bien que très touristique.

Santa Cruz – La vraie vie

Très peu touristique, perché sur la colline, ce petit village vous permet de voir la vie locale intacte.

San Marcos – La Hippie

Le spot idéal pour poser ses valises et faire une pause durant son voyage: on y vient du monde entier pour faire une retraite et se poser de grandes questions sur sa vie lors d’une séance de méditation.

Nourriture à base de yoga pour le corps, de méditation pour l’esprit et de plats vegan pour l’estomac, le tout dans des cabanes de bois écologiques blotties dans des jardins ou perchées sur la colline avec vue sur le lac et le volcan. Une ambiance hippie et à la cool complètement à part et particulièrement agréable : le rythme y est plus lent qu’ailleurs, on est loin de la frénésie mercantile de Panajachel, on y joue de la guitare, on y rencontre des personnes posées venues méditer, faire du yoga, prendre le temps… Un autre monde qu’il est vraiment bon d’explorer et qui a marqué mon séjour sur le lac. Coup de cœur!

L’ancienne capitale du Guatemala, la belle Antigua, est une charmante petite ville classée au patrimoine mondiale de l’UNESCO pour ses beaux bâtiments anciens, ses belles églises, ses rues pavées inégales et ses maisons coloniales colorées. Il fait bon s’y balader et s’y régaler d’une bonne glace pour se rafraîchir lorsque que l’après-midi le mercure frôle les 30 degrés…

Une belle balade consiste à grimper jusqu’au Cerro de la Cruz au petit matin, colline d’où l’on jouit d’une belle vue sur la ville, le volcan Agua tout proche, ou encore l’Acatenango.

On pourra également visiter l’un des nombreux musées ou églises de la ville, ou encore découvrir le travail du jade pour lequel le Guatemala est réputé. Le marché artisanal ou le marché local sont également à découvrir.

Si vous êtes chanceux, vous pourrez profiter de l’ambiance festive de la ville toute entière qui s’anime lors de la semaine sainte.

En ce premier dimanche de la semaine sainte, chacun s’active pour réaliser devant son pas de porte la plus belle « alfombra » ou tapis de fleurs et copeaux de bois coloré qui forme une allée en vue de la procession qui va avoir lieu.

Un beau spectacle que celui de voir chaque famille former son tapis avec fierté, un moment de partage qui réunit petits et grands et permet à chacun de laisser parler sa créativité : fleurs, paillettes, cœurs, motifs divers et variés formés au moyen de pochoirs, couronnes… ces parterres colorés sont superbes.

C’est ensuite la musique de l’orchestre qui envahit la rue pour la procession et la foule qui la constitue : la statue de Jésus portée par les hommes, puis celle de la Vierge Marie portée par des femmes voilées de dentelle noire.

La procession passée, ce sont les éboueurs qui passent et clôturent le cortège pour balayer les restes des tapis de fleurs piétinés. La circulation reprend et chacun va déguster une bonne tortilla au marché de nuit de la place de la Merced. Un air de fête règne dans cette petite ville fort agréable à visiter.

A la découverte des temples Mayas de Tikal

Partez depuis la charmante ville de Flores en bus à 4h30 du matin pour arriver sur le site de Tikal à la fraîche, à 6h, tant qu’il n’y a pas encore trop de monde et que la chaleur est supportable.

Suivez votre guide dans la forêt tropicale de ce beau site classé au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco.

Écoutez les cris des perroquets, les pas bruyants des Coatis dans les feuilles ou le râle – impressionnant – des singes hurleurs.

Jouez à « où est Charlie » en cherchant le bec jaune des toucans perchés dans les arbres.

Sentez-vous tout petit au pied des immenses arbres de cette forêt dense.

Et enfin, admirez les belles pyramides des temples mayas de Tikal datant de 700 après JC,  et depuis leur sommet, à plus de 45m de haut, la vue à 360° sur la forêt.

Visiter une grotte à Semuc Champey, est une expérience à part entière : préparez-vous à faire quelque chose d’unique et surprenant, que vous n’auriez jamais fait dans ces conditions à la maison !

Récit d’une journée pas comme les autres…

L’aventure commence quand vous embarquez à bord d’une sorte de jeep, entassés à plus de 20, debouts, dans le coffre plat du véhicule… Accrochez-vous bien car la piste cahotante vous réserve quelques trous surprises et la pente est forte… Trouvez la bonne position car vous êtes partis pour environ 10km. Si tant est que vous puissiez le voir selon votre position dans la jeep, le paysage vallonné est superbe : caféiers, cacaoyers, bananiers bordent la route et les collines verdoyantes arborent une nature luxuriante.

Arrivés à l’entrée de la grotte, commencez à vous poser des questions – mais pas trop – quand votre guide, vous dit que pour visiter la grotte, il ne faut rien prendre avec vous: Partez en maillot de bain, pieds nus ou en chaussures d’eau pour les mieux équipés, et c’est tout. Ah bon ? Et là, abandonnez tous vos référents en matière de visite de grotte en France, celle-ci ne ressemblera à rien de ce que vous avez déjà vécu.

Ne soyez pas trop étonnés quand votre guide vous tend une bougie allumée à la main.

Ou encore quand, pour rajouter un peu de fun à l’ambiance, il vous dessine un motif tribal sur le visage à la suie de cette même bougie.

Entrez dans la grotte éclairée uniquement à la lumière des bougies de votre groupe.

Vous avez les pieds, les jambes voire tout le corps dans l’eau fraîche de la grotte. Ambiance unique garantie.

Au programme : toboggan naturel, sauts de 5m, escalade à l’échelle ou à la corde à travers une mini cascade, passage dans des cavités naturelles, déplacement à la nage dans l’eau de la grotte bougie entre les dents… Bref, une visite qui s’apparente plus à de la spéléo sans casque, chaussures ou combinaison. Une vraie aventure !

La journée continue hors de la grotte avec une descente en Tubing (grosse bouée sur laquelle on s’affale tranquillement – une bière à la main – et qui dérive lentement selon le cours de la rivière pour une jolie balade).

Une fois le déjeuner pris, il est temps de faire un peu d’activité physique pour gravir les 500m de dénivelé qui vous permettront d’atteindre le Mirador (point de vue) de Samuc Champey, depuis lequel on peut admirer l’eau turquoise de la rivière couler en cascade dans de jolies piscines naturelles.

Un bon bain dans ces eaux claires permettra de se rafraîchir et de se remettre de cette marche active.

Forts de toutes ses émotions, vous aurez bien mérité une heure de repos près de la piscine de l’hostel Vista Verde, à Lanquin, pour profiter du coucher de soleil. Dégustez un délicieux burrito al pollo (au poulet) accompagné d’un bon smoothie, avant une nuit reposante dans une cabane perchée sur la colline : la vue sur la vallée est imprenable.

Au petit matin, c’est le chant des oiseaux qui vous réveillera à l’aube et bien que vos petits yeux à peine ouverts vous alertent sur le fait qu’il n’est que 6h du matin, vous ne résisterez pas longtemps à l’envie d’aller admirer les premiers rayons de soleil.

Un marché haut en couleurs

La petite ville de Chichicastenango a ce petit quelque chose que les autres n’ont pas… il s’agit du plus grand marché du Guatemala et de l’un des plus grands marchés d’Amérique Centrale.

Le Guatemala, réputé pour ses beaux vêtements colorés, ne vous décevra pas si vous aller flâner dans les ruelles bondées de Chichi, un dimanche, grand jour de marché.

Vous aurez alors autour de vous étoffes, ceintures, blouses, étoles, sacs, chaussures, porte-monnaie, sacoches, bracelets, babioles et autres accessoires en tous genres, pour beaucoup en coton ou en bois de différentes teintes. Préparez-vous donc à un véritable festival de couleurs, un vrai régal pour les yeux. Du rose, du rouge, du jaune, du vert, du bleu, du noir… mais si bien porté par les belles guatémaltèques, que le bariolage des tenues trouve une certaine harmonie.

Une belle balade au milieu des étals et des vendeurs ambulants de tous âges, que je vous conseille pour son aspect folklorique et authentique, mais dont il est vraiment difficile de repartir sans un petit souvenir (que l’on n’oubliera pas de négocier un peu au passage sous peine de l’emporter au prix fort)…

L’incroyable ascension du volcan Acatenango

Faites un bond dans le temps: vous n’avez que quelques années à peine, disons 6 ou 7 ans, et vous venez d’assister à votre premier feu d’artifice: une explosion visuelle et sonore simplement jubilatoire . Vous attendez avec impatience le prochain feu, vous en redemandez, vous avez les yeux qui brillent, vous battez des mains tellement vous trouvez cela impressionnant. Vous êtes comme un enfant devant un marée de cadeaux le jour de Noël!

C’est la même sensation que vous retrouverez quelques années plus tard, lorsque après une ascension corsée du volcan Acatenango (plus de 1200m de dénivelés), vous assisterez au spectacle incroyable du volcan voisin, le volcan de Fuego, EN ÉRUPTION!! L’après- midi, il s’agit seulement d’un bruit d’explosion et d’une épaisse fumée noire de cendres, mais la nuit venue, on s’aperçoit que cette fumée est en réalité un jet de lave rougeoyante incroyablement lumineux et fabuleusement impressionnant. Vous ne pourrez retenir vos « oh » et « wouah » et « wouh »… et autres interjections devant ce spectacle complètement surréel de ces jets et coulées de lave accompagnés d’un bruit de tonnerre par un beau ciel étoilé. Une curiosité de la nature superbe à observer.

Il ne s’agit pas d’une éruption isolée, mais assez régulière bien que plus ou moins forte selon les moments. Ainsi vous aurez tout le loisir de profiter ce spectacle naturel à de nombreuses reprises durant la nuit en tente que vous passerez à plus de 3600m d’altitude. Autant dire que vous dormirez peu, tant en raison du froid qu’en raison de l’envie irrépressible que vous aurez de ne manquer aucune éruption!

Pour clôturer cette aventure, levez-vous à l’aube pour un lever de soleil simplement incroyable derrière la mer de nuages formée autour du Volcan Agua. Vous en resterez sans voix.

Un moment unique et fort, et définitivement un énorme coup de cœur pour ce trek à inscrire sans hésitation aucune en haut de sa Bucket List.
