Escale au milieu du désert

Ce qui frappe immédiatement le « badaud » ou plutôt l’aventurier venu se perdre à San Pedro de Atacama, eh bien, c’est la sécheresse… En moins d’une journée, les lèvres gercées par le soleil, la peau asséchée par l’air chaud et sec de la journée, presque brûlée par le vent froid du soir, vous rappelleront que vous êtes dans le désert le plus sec au monde! Vous n’aurez pas besoin de regarder la météo, le soleil sera assurément au RDV, avec un fort indice UV, vous ne verrez pas l’ombre d’un nuage, il fera chaud, il fera froid, il y aura du vent…  Ici, on parle de désert de sel, de Vallée de la Mort, de Vallée de la Lune… bref des paysages lunaires. Bienvenue à San Pedro de Atacama!

Alors que vous vous demandiez déjà ce que vous êtes venu faire là, vous vous rendez compte que vous êtes dans un village avec un seule rue qui concentre toute la vie de la région. Et devinez quoi, cette vie ne tourne qu’autour du tourisme: hostels, agences de tourisme à gogo, boutiques de souvenir… Pour autant on ressent vite l’ambiance paisible et attachante de cette oasis au milieu du désert.

Il faut bien entendu sortir de la bourgade pour comprendre ce que tant de touristes viennent chercher dans cette région du Chili, en particulier nos compatriotes français, très nombreux à San Pedro de Atacama!

Partez à l’aventure dans un 4×4 ou une Jeep break bien haute sur une route en ligne droite et prenez-en plein les yeux: lagunes aux eaux miroitantes et colorées de rose ou de bleu turquoise, volcans aux hauts sommets enneigés, lacs de sel asséchés, steppes de luzerne à perte de vue, geysers, couchers de soleil rougeoyants, formations rocheuses incroyables, canyons vertigineux, montagnes colorées (« Arcoiris » = Arc-en-Ciel), paysages lunaires, Vicuñas ou Llamas qui broutent le long de la route… Des panoramas incroyablement beaux, un spectacle qui vous en mettra plein les yeux de jour comme de nuit.

L’aridité et le faible taux d’humidité de cette région en font un lieu de choix pour l’observation du ciel. La vue, dégagée toute l’année, permet d’admirer les étoiles et la voie lactée comme nulle part ailleurs, à l’œil nu ou mieux encore, au télescope. La preuve en est que le désert d’Atacama abrite plusieurs observatoires astronomiques internationaux. On en oublie presque le froid, saisissant, à cette heure de la nuit.

En quelques mots: une destination vraiment magnifique.

Quand le temps suspend son vol… bienvenue à l’île de Pâques.

Il est de ces moments, bien trop rares je dois dire, où le temps reste en suspension, où l’on se concentre sur le moment présent, où l’on ne pense plus, on ressent. On ressent toutes ces petites choses… La force du Moaï fièrement érigé. L ‘énergie de la pierre volcanique. La mélodie des vagues qui nous berce. Une brise légère qui souffle sur notre peau. Le soleil qui nous enveloppe de ses rayons. L ‘air iodé qui caresse nos narines. Le bleu turquoise de la mer et son eau cristalline à perte de vue. Les courbes harmonieuses des collines environnantes. La douce et chaude lumière du soir qui met du baume cœur. Cet air de musique traditionnelle que l’on a envie de fredonner. Cette impression de bout du monde. Ce sentiment d’avoir le cœur léger. Ce besoin irrationnel d’étendre ses bras comme un oiseau pour mieux sentir l’air et mieux saisir le moment. Ce sentiment d’infini et de liberté à toute épreuve. Cette envie de capturer cet instant à jamais. Ce sentiment que la vie est belle. Enfin, cette impression d’être au plus près de ce que l’on bonheur.

Voilà, pour tout vous dire, le sentiment très personnel et subjectif que j’ai eu en parcourant les steppes balayées au vent, le long de la côte, de l’île de Pâques.

Cette petite île perdue au milieu de l’Océan Pacifique vous surprendra. Outre ses impressionnants et immenses « Moaï » (ces incontournables statues érigées au 15ème siècle qui ont fait de l’île un lieu mondialement connu à juste titre), l’île de Pâques a bien plus à offrir: une nature à l’état sauvage avec ses steppes à pertes de vue dans lesquelles paissent des vaches ou se promènent des chevaux sauvages, de superbes paysages formés par les anciens volcans de l’île, des couchers de soleil aux couleurs incroyables, des plages à l’eau translucide, des criques ou piscines naturelles agréables, une culture et des traditions fortes, une ambiance familiale de village très paisible et réconfortante… De quoi être émerveillé et en prendre plein les yeux, mais aussi le lieu idéal pour prendre le temps: on se sent rapidement comme à la maison sur l’île, et la gentillesse des chiliens n’y est pas pour rien.

Définitivement, un lieu magique et un brin mystique qui mérite le – gros – détour.

Compter 5h de vol à partir de Santiago du Chili et un bon budget. Prévoir environ 20-25€ par nuit min. Tout est plus cher que dans le reste du Chili. Les restaurants notamment, mais possibilité de cuisiner soi-même dans la plupart des auberges. Une fois sur place, on peut se déplacer à pied ou à vélo pour les plus courageux (c’est également l’option la moins chère), louer une voiture/un 2 roues/un quad, ou même faire du stop en toute sécurité.

A quand même 6h de route de Salvador de Bahia par bus de nuit se trouve la petite ville de Lençois, lieu de prédilection pour découvrir le magnifique parc naturel de la Chapada Diamantina et de ses alentours.

Cette jolie petite ville a gardé son cachet avec ses ruelles pavées, ses beaux marché couvert et pont anciens, mais on n’y reste que peu de temps, juste celui de prendre son sac à dos et de partir en quête des merveilles de la nature environnante: des piscines naturelles aux eaux bleues cristallines, des cascades, des rivières d’eau étonnamment rouge du fait de sa richesse en fer mais assez pure pour que l’on puisse la boire sans crainte à même le cours d’eau, des grottes, et surtout des points de vue inoubliables.

Un trek de deux jours (soit déjà 44km de marche) dans la Valle do Pati, au sein du parc naturel est juste une expérience incroyable: traversée de rivières, escalade, marche dans les plaines, nuit chez l’habitant coupé du reste du monde, couchers de soleil superbes, panoramas à couper le souffle 400m au-dessus du vide…

On en prend plein les yeux, on vit une aventure humaine intense et on garde un souvenir impérissable.

Je repars du Brésil avec des images de cette immensité plein la tête, un vrai sentiment – prévu et assumé dès le départ – d’inachevé, au vu du peu de temps que j’allais passer dans ce beau et grand pays, et une bucket list bien remplie des nombreuses choses que je souhaiterais encore y découvrir un jour.

Salvador de Bahia

Le Brésil est un pays immense, un continent! Regarder une carte c’est l’imaginer, mais le parcourir c’est réaliser… Après avoir étudié les nombreuses heures de bus à subir pour aller de Rio à Salvador de Bahia (plus de 24h), les différentes étapes possibles sur la route (nombreuses stations balnéaires magnifiques à découvrir, telles que Buzios, Barra Grande, Itacaré, Morro de Sao Paulo, mais qu’une météo très capricieuse en ce début d’automne sud-américain m’a dissuadé de mettre au programme), j’ai fait comme tout le monde, j’ai pris un vol interne pour rejoindre l’état de Bahia…

M’attendait la jolie ville de Salvador de Bahia, inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, avec ses belles maisons coloniales colorées, ses rues pavées, ses nombreuses églises, ses airs de samba tambourinés dans les rues, ses spectacles de Capoeira, les chants amplis de ferveur qui s’échappent de ses lieux de culte, ses plages, son phare…

Un centre historique qui a conservé tout son charme mais dont il ne faut pas oublier qu’il ne représente qu’une toute petite partie de cette immense ville pour le reste malheureusement peu avenante.

Rio, ville aux multiples facettes

Si je vous dis Rio, vous pensez à quoi?

Au Carnaval bien sûr! Mais pour tous ceux qui n’ont pas la chance de découvrir la ville durant cette semaine de festivités orgiaques, la ville a beaucoup à offrir et reste pour moi une belle découverte. Ville aux multiples facettes, elle est duelle en de nombreux points et mérite que l’on prenne le temps de la découvrir et de la « vivre » quelques temps.

Rio, c’est Sea, Sex and Sun sur la plage…

Rio a l’atout majeur de compter plusieurs longues plages de sable blanc, doux, et ultra fin en plein cœur de la ville: le rêve! De quoi surfer, bronzer, se promener après le travail ou le weekend. La journée, la plage reste peu fréquentée, mais le soir venu, de nombreux surfeurs troquent leurs vêtements contre une combinaison et courent profiter des vagues et de leurs gros rouleaux à la lumière des derniers rayons du soleil. Si vous souhaitez contempler de beaux éphèbes aux muscles bien dessinés et au torse épilé marcher en slip le long de la plage en toute simplicité … vous êtes au bon endroit. Le Brésil n’a pas obtenu sa réputation de glamour pour rien! Il y a comme un air de fête qui règne sur la plage grâce à la musique, aux fameuses Caïpirinha et autres cocktails proposés par les nombreuses paillotes éphémères ou les vendeurs ambulants qui se trouvent un peu partout sur la plage. De nombreux promeneurs marchent sur la promenade située le long des plages au crépuscule, font du sport, jouent au beach volley, se baignent, prennent l’apéritif en regardant la mer, se rafraîchissent avec une eau de coco bien fraîche ou un açaï gelado (glace à la baie d’açaï), ou encore se rendent à l’Arpéador pour admirer le coucher de soleil.

mais c’est aussi du moins glamour…

De nombreux vendeurs de rue de pinces à linge, éponges, lunettes, montres, rasoirs et autres accessoires à 3 francs six sous, des vendeurs ambulants de bonbons ou chocolat à l’unité, de biscuits (1€ les 4 paquets) ou de salgados (sorte de feuilleté au fromage ou à la viande accompagné d’un jus de fruit pour moins de 0.80€) dont on ne sait pas très bien comment ils arrivent à vivre… Beaucoup de travailleurs pauvres, comme ces hommes qui arpentent la plage à la recherche de bouteilles en plastique ou de canettes laissées par les cariocas et qui gagnent quelques pièces en échange de chaque kilo collecté….

Rio, c’est Ipanema, Leblon ou Copacabana…

De hauts buildings résidentiels avec appartements vue mer, gardien 24h/24 et gros engins garés au sous-sol: bref de l’opulence Miami style pour la classe la plus haute de la société…

mais c’est aussi… Santa Marta, Rocinha, Vidigal … bref des favelas!

On appelle favelas les quartiers pauvres de Rio. Situées sur les hauteurs, les favelas sont constituées de petites habitations colorées perchées sur les collines (les « morros ») de Rio. Le contraste que forme leur apparence en comparaison avec les buildings de hauts standing des quartiers chics est saisissant, mais ce sont ces paysages qui donnent à Rio tout son charme. On y vit dans des conditions plus ou moins salubres, précaires et dangereuses… les trafiquants de drogue y sont nombreux et il n’est pas rare d’y voir des armes et d’y entendre des coups de feu… Bon ça, c’est pour le côté extrême. Je n’ai rien vu de tout ça. Il est tout à fait possible de se rendre dans les favelas (avec des guides locaux c’est mieux quand même) pour se rendre compte par soi-même que c’est avant tout un lieu de vie pacifié où les gens vivent car ils n’ont d’autre choix mais avec l’envie de s’en sortir et d’y vivre le mieux possible, paisiblement en famille.

Rio, c’est le Pain de Sucre et le Christ Rédempteur…

Deux beaux sites situés en hauteur et qui offrent par conséquent de superbes vues sur Rio et ses morro mais ultra touristique et pas donné comme visite…

mais c’est aussi … des musées, des centres culturels, des randonnées, des parcs!

Rio comporte plusieurs musées intéressants comme le Museu de Amañha ( musée de demain » tourné sur l’écologie principalement), musée d’art contemporain ou moderne (MAC et MAM), et surtout des centres culturels gratuits très riches (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil ou Centro Cultural dos Correios).

Le lagon d’Ipanema offre une belle balade à vélo, et le Jardin Botanique ou le parc Lage, une belle promenade à pied… sans compter les nombreuses randonnées ou balades que l’on peut faire autour de la ville pour accéder à de magnifiques panoramas. (Je recommande vivement celle du Morro Dos Irmaos qui domine Ipanema, Leblon et Rocinha)

Rio, c’est la samba, des sourires et des gens adorables…

Des airs de musique entraînants, des costumes colorés, des danses, Rio c’est la samba! Et croyez-moi, suivre le rythme n’est pas facile et très physique! (cf. un cours de 1h30 de samba durant lequel j’ai bougé mon popotin comme jamais et je suis sortie trempée!)

De nombreux bars dans le quartier nocturne de Lapa, pour sortir, boire une cachaça, danser, partager de bons moments entre amis.

Des gens adorables prêts à vous faire découvrir avec passion leur ville ou leur quartier, à vous renseigner ou vous aider dans votre voyage.

mais c’est aussi… beaucoup de blabla en portugais!

Une langue chantante et agréable qui fait penser par ses aspects-là à l’italien, en réalité relativement proche de l’espagnol, mais qu’on ne comprend vraiment pas toujours… Peu de gens parlent espagnol ou anglais, même à Rio. Bref il faut s’accrocher.

Au final, avec ses multiples facettes, Rio, la belle Rio est une ville attachante où l’on s’imagine facilement vivre quelques années…

Quand l’expression « Pura Vida » prend tout son sens…

Tu viens de commander un jus de fruit frais, on te le sert, tu payes et le serveur te répond « Con gusto » (« avec plaisir »), « Pura Vida! ».  Pura Vida?

« Pura Vida » veut littéralement dire « Vie Pure » mais je dirais que la signification de cette expression se traduirait en français par « la vie est belle ». On l’utilise pour dire « c’est cool », « bonjour » ou « aurevoir », « merci », « c’est génial »…

Cette expression, je l’ai entendue vraiment souvent au Costa Rica, mais pour moi elle a pris tout son sens sur la côte Caraïbe, dans les petites villes de Cahuita et Puerto Viejo.

Situées à une demie heure l’une de l’autre, ces stations balnéaires ressemblent plus à des villages : quelques rues principales dans lesquelles se concentrent quelques cabanes colorées, bars, restaurants et hôtels. Très touristiques mais sans en avoir trop l’air, on s’attache rapidement à leur ambiance très détendue, baba cool à la jamaïcaine, bref Pura Vida.

Comment passer le temps? Il fait bon prendre un vélo et aller se poser à la plage (de belles plages de sable blanc ou noir), bouquiner dans un hammak, surfer sur de belles (et grosses vagues) ou juste se promener les pieds dans le sable. Le parc naturel de Cahuita est également une belle surprise pour un parc gratuit: une belle marche dans la forêt, tout près de la plage, et de nombreux animaux (racoons, singes, paresseux, serpents, crabes bleus, …) pour mon plus grand plaisir.

Le parc naturel de Tortuguero est situé sur un bras de mer dont l’une des faces donne sur la côté Caraïbe (c’est en réalité une belle plage) et l’autre face est constituée de mangrove donnant sur la lagune. (Pour mieux visualiser, je vous invite à cliquer ici)

C’est donc au moyen d’une « lancha » (un bateau motorisé) que l’on accède au petit village de Tortuguero après un trajet d’une heure environ. (Je passe les détails des nombreux bus qu’il faut prendre depuis San José la capitale pour atteindre le point de départ de la lancha!)

Hyper authentique bien que touristique, il semble que le temps n’a pas d’effet ici, on y vit une vie qui semble paisible. Pas de voiture ici, on se déplace à pied principalement. On vit dans des cabanes en bois coloré, au rythme de la nature: on se lève tôt et on se couche tôt.

La découverte du parc naturel de Tortuguero est la principale activité de ce petit village. Le meilleur moyen pour cela est de prendre tôt le matin, à la fraîche (i.e. 6h du mat) un canoë ou un kayak afin de naviguer sans bruit dans les eaux paisibles de la lagune, au moment où les animaux sont les plus actifs. Notre guide nous montre alors toutes sortes d’animaux: singes hurleurs, capucins, spider monkeys, de nombreux oiseaux, caïmans (il n’est pas conseillé de tomber à l’eau!) cachés dans la mangrove…

C’est ensuite une belle journée de farniente, détente et tranquillité  sous le soleil avec au programme promenade et baignade sur la longue plage de Tortuguero qui nous attend.

Au moment du coucher de soleil, c’est du côté de la paisible lagune, que l’on admire les derniers rayons de soleil (à 17h50 en cette saison) et les quelques lanchas qui effectuent leur dernier trajet de la journée.

Un cadre idéal pour se reposer au calme, loin de l’agitation de la ville, dans ce lieu très particulier qui mérite vraiment le détour.

Une journée à La Fortuna, quelle chance!

Depuis Monteverde, prenez une piste sinueuse dans les collines. La superbe vue sur les vallons bien verts fait vite oublier que la route est vraiment mauvaise. Mais le clou du spectacle, c’est l’apparition du majestueux volcan Arenal, qui se fait de plus en plus proche au fur et à mesure de votre avancée.

Montez alors à bord d’une lancha (barque motorisée) sur un joli petit lac pour vous approcher du volcan et arriver jusqu’à la petite ville de La Fortuna qui, ayant échappé à plusieurs éruptions, porte bien son nom…

Il est maintenant interdit de faire l’ascension de ce volcan toujours en activité, que l’on voit fumer en permanence, mais qui n’entre, bienheureusement, que rarement en éruption.

En revanche, une belle balade d’une demie-journée – via un tour par exemple – permet de réaliser une visite guidée de la forêt luxuriante situé au pied du volcan et de voir ainsi de beaux points de vue sur le volcan, de grandes cascades et de nombreux animaux: coatis, toucans, singes hurleurs, spider monkeys, capucins, oiseaux colorés…

Mais le moment le plus insolite de cette journée reste la baignade dans l’eau (naturellement) chaude venue des contreforts de la terre: à la lumière de la bougie, le soir venu, on s’assoit dans une piscine naturelle alimentée en permanence par une rivière et sa cascade.

Un moment unique en son genre qui restera un très bon souvenir.

Mes premiers parc et plage du Costa Rica

Petite station balnéaire sur la côte Pacifique, Montezuma est un coin tranquille où il fait bon passer quelques jours loin de la grande ville.
Une rue principale, quelques hotels et auberges, des petits restos en bord de plage où il fait bon déguster un Gallo pinto (plat traditionnel à base de riz mélangé avec des haricots rouges, servi avec une viande au choix) ou un Casado (Entendez littéralement le plat de l’homme « marié »: là encore du riz, des frijoles les fameux haricots rouges, une salade souvent de choux, parfois des bananes plantain, et une viande ou un poisson au choix …), accompagné d’un Batido (jus de fruits frais dilué avec de l’eau ou du lait façon smoothie ou milkshake)… On vient ici pour les plages de sable noir ou de sable et galets rouges qui jouxtent la ville, ou en encore pour le parc naturel de Cabo Blanco.

Situé à moins d’une heure en bus de Montezuma, ce parc, mon premier au Costa Rica est une belle découverte: une balade un peu sportive de 1h30 dans la forêt permet d’atteindre une belle plage de sable blanc tout en rencontrant de nombreux animaux en chemin: coatis, familles de singes hurleurs, serpents, oiseaux, écureuils… Rien de tel après cette bonne marche qu’un plongeon dans la mer, mais attention, ici les vagues sont puissantes et il y a de nombreux rochers, les précautions d’usage sont de rigueur…

Une belle première étape dans mon voyage au Costa Rica!

Les yeux dans le vert à Monteverde

Accessible avec patience par une piste cahotante qui grimpe dur, la petite ville de Monteverde se mérite… mais à l’arrivée, on n’est pas déçu par ce que l’on y trouve.

Ici, on y vit sur un nuage, ou plutôt dans les nuages (ou presque) et c’est à cela que la localité doit son nom. Car ici tout est bien vert, même en cette fin de saison sèche (de décembre à avril) alors que dans la plupart des forêts costaricaines la nature montre quelques signes de souffrance. Et si la forêt tropicale humide proche est ainsi, c’est parce qu’elle bénéficie d’une forêt de nuages, entendez par là un magnifique regroupement de nuages blancs au-dessus de la végétation, qui la maintient humide et verdoyante toute l’année.

Pas étonnant que cet écrin de verdure protégé sous forme de réserves soit devenu le paradis de nombreux animaux: singes, oiseaux, insectes… mais aussi des touristes venus les voir.

La commune vit essentiellement de l’écotourisme: excursions guidées dans les réserves pour l’observation des oiseaux et animaux de jour comme de nuit, promenade sur des points suspendus ou tyroliennes dans la canopée…

On paye le prix fort mais la nature nous le rend bien par ses merveilles: coatis, singes, paresseux, tatoos, magnifiques mais rares Quetzals (oiseau emblématique du Guatemala), oiseaux en tous genres, serpents, scorpions, tarentules… Un régal pour les amoureux de la nature et de la vie sauvage!
